Ikea Adds Air Purifier to Smart Home Line

Ikea is expanding its smart home line with the Starkvind air purifier.

Developed for indoor use, ideally in spaces up to 215 square feet, the product works on its own, but it also connects to Ikea’s Trådfri gateway. In that case, users can control and schedule product operations via the Ikea Home smart app. The air purifier has five different fan speeds and an auto mode, which can adjust the fan speed with a built-in air quality sensor.

Ikea designed the Starkvind air purifier in two versions, a standalone floor model and a multi-function side table. The air purifier’s pre-filter captures big particles such as hair and dust, Ikea noted. A second filter removes approximately 99.5% of smaller airborne particles, and a gas filter absorbs various gaseous pollutants such as formaldehyde and reduces strong odors such as from smoking and cooking.

“For Ikea, the smart home is not about gadgets,” said Henrik Telander, Starkvind product owner at Ikea. “It’s about making life and home better through combining our solid home furnishing knowledge with digital solutions and technology. That’s why we explore the possibility of integrating the function of purifying air and technology to provide a good experience for customers at home.”
